BREAK-Fast

This week around dinner time, I got a phone call from one of my guys in our congregation. Like usual, when someone who never calls me, calls, something is strange about it. He called in to ask me one question on speakerphone; Why don’t we fast on Sundays during lent? It turned out that he had a long hour debate over this topic of fasting.

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus,

“How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”

Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?

They cannot, so long as they have him with them.

But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.

Mark 2:18-20

In the traditional Lenten Fast, it is meant to be 40 days in honor of Jesus’ fasting in the desert. If you were to fast all throughout Lenten, it would actually be 46 days. As Jesus said in the synoptics gospels when they asked him why his disciples did not fast, he noted, how can they fast while he was present? The Lenten fast is over on Easter Day, but we often forget the importance of every Sunday. We are meant to celebrate the Risen King every Sunday but a lot of times we forget to celebrate, and Sundays have become dutiful and ritual over celebartory. Fasting should never be a punishment to yourself in order to please God. In truth if you really plan to fast 40 days like Jesus would, you should take a break every Sunday- trust me I tried. What I am trying to say is, this is your fast between you and God, not a competition nor it is a time to one-up someone by adding ridiculous amounts of things to abstain. Holiness comes from drawing near to God not giving up stuff or #konmarie.

So fast 46 days if you like, fast 40 days if you like. You decide and don’t let others discourage your decision!!!

I will continue talking about Fasting in this season!
